Book Recommendations for Japanese Books

Love this book. Definitely a good choice to read in Japanese if you have a fairly advanced vocabulary. There's also a movie of this and an English translation out too.

I tried to continue with the series but 魍魎の匣 was a letdown for me.

I tried to continue with the series but 魍魎の匣 was a letdown for me.
That's a pity; was it anything in particular or did you just think it didn't measure up to the first book? (Perhaps I'll try skipping that one and reading one of the later ones instead...)

It's been a few years since I tried to read it, but in my memory it was just long and boring. I read over 100 pages of it and couldn't get engaged with the plot. The mystery started with something about a young girl being pushed to her death from a train platform. They questioned another girl who was with her at the station, and that was about as far as I got. I think if I'd read farther the main mystery was about a serial killer who stuffed his dismembered victims into boxes. I guess I just found the story of the two girls boring and vaguely repellent, and I couldn't relate to it much. The author chooses uncomfortable and "ugly" topics at times, and in Ubume that worked for me since it was offset by a lot of charming dialogue and old-fashioned atmosphere, but 魍魎の匣 didn't strike me as charming so much as wordy and grotesque. If you're interested in it by all means give it a try--the novel seems to have lots of Japanese fans judging by the amazon customer reviews--but it didn't keep my interest the way that Ubume did.
